Yorkshire bragging rights belong to Leeds as fierce Championship top-six battle picks up momentum

Another enthralling Championship weekend is behind us as the race for automatic promotion and play-off spots begins to take shape.

While some promotion hopefuls, like Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion, faltered, others, such as Burnley and Sunderland, fortified their positions in a fierce top-six race.

Cardiff City’s thumping 5-0 home triumph against Plymouth Argyle was among the most remarkable Championship results, as the Bluebirds continue to build momentum after a dreadful start.

However, the pinnacle of Gameweek 1-0 took place at Elland Road.

Warm promotion contenders Leeds United locked horns with fellow Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United in a mouth-watering contest.

Following a scoreless first half, the home side netted two unanswered second-half goals to return to winning ways after back-to-back draws with a crucial 2-0 win.

Amid growing speculation over the Whites’ interest in signing Josuha Guilavogui on a Bosman deal, via LeedsLive, Daniel Farke’s team got a precious victory over the line last Friday.

Second-half strikes from Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph propelled Leeds to a potentially season-defining home triumph against one of their fiercest promotion rivals.

Farke’s charges outplayed the Blades in the opening 45 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net despite boasting 62% possession and launching seven shots, including two on target.

Leeds had to wait until the 69th minute to break the deadlock.

Struijk latched on to a low corner-kick delivery from Joe Rothwell and hammered the ball past Michael Cooper with a devastating first-time effort to give the Whites a well-deserved lead.

Chris Wilder’s side tried to bounce back after falling behind, but they couldn’t find a way past Farke’s well-oiled machine, finishing the game without a shot on target.

But they were in it until the final moments before second-half substitute Joseph pounced on Joel Piroe’s defence-splitting through ball to make it 2-0 on the 90-minute mark.

As a result of their third consecutive win against United, Leeds leapfrogged the Blades into third, maintaining a three-point deficit on early pacesetters Sunderland.
