Sheffield United go top of Championship despite 1-1 draw with Bristol City

Sheffield United have moved back to the top of the Championship table despite playing out a 1-1 draw with Bristol City on Tuesday night at Bramall Lane.

Both teams failed to score in the first-half, mainly due to the brilliance of the goalkeepers Michael Cooper and Max O’Leary.

Cooper brilliantly denied Sinclair Armstrong on 34 minutes before O’Leary made two fine stopes at the other end.

However, Tyrese Campbell broke the deadlock on the hour mark with a cool finish.

Sheffield United looked on course for a comfortable victory before substitute Mark Sykes shocked the hosts with a dramatic 90th-minute leveller.

Chris Wilder’s men pushed for a winner and had two penalty appeals turned down in stoppage time.

The latest result leaves the club just a point clear of Leeds United, who fell to a shocking 1-0 loss to Portsmouth at the weekend.

The Whites will overtake their Yorkshire rivals if they beat Millwall in Wednesday’s Championship game at Elland Road.

Sheffield United have had an excellent 2024-25 campaign under Wilder. They have won 24 of their 37 matches in the second-tier to collect 77 points, and per Football Today, they are currently one of the top favourites to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The Blades are aiming for an immediate return to the English top-flight after finishing at the bottom of the Premier League table last season.

The South Yorkshire outfit sacked manager Paul Heckingbottom after he led them to a disastrous start in 2023-24.

Wilder took over from the 47-year-old in December, but he also miserably failed to revive their fortunes, with the team finishing an incredible eight points behind 19th-placed Burnley.

However, the club decided to keep him as their manager and that has proved to be a brilliant decision as they are now in a brilliant position to secure automatic promotion.
