Leeds United’s pursuit of Aston Villa starlet Louie Barry has suffered a substantial blow after Derby County stole the march in the race for the 21-year-old striker.
Alan Nixon reports on his Patreon channel that the Rams have leapfrogged the Whites in the race for Barcelona’s famous La Masia product.
Barry enjoyed a sterling first half of the season on loan at third-tier Stockport County, bagging 15 goals and adding three assists across 23 League One appearances.
His scintillating form at Edgeley Park made Unai Emery’s side recall the youngster this month, though his first-team prospects at Villa Park look bleak.
With Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran leading the line, the Birmingham outfit could offload Barry again in the January transfer window, with a permanent departure on the cards.
Leeds among several suitors
Daniel Farke is in the market for a new centre-forward amid growing exit speculation surrounding the future of the out-of-favour Patrick Bamford.
Leeds are reportedly open to letting their long-serving stalwart leave the club this winter after generating interest from Genoa and Wrexham.
Joe Gelhardt could follow in Bamford’s footsteps. He has already expressed his desire to cut ties with the Whites.
With the unsettled duo pushing for winter exits, the Whites could use a new face up front.
Barry is an exciting option.
However, Burnley, Middlesbrough and Sunderland are also in the frame.
Derby in pole position
Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United could cause havoc in a prospective transfer tug-of-war.
But Derby have emerged as the front-runners.
Unfortunately, Leeds cannot guarantee Barry regular first-team football at Elland Road.
Joel Piroe has been Farke’s first choice in the front third, with Mateo Joseph acting as a back-up striker.
On the other hand, the Rams are desperate to improve their misfiring frontline and could offer Barry what he needs – consistent opportunities.
