Leeds United and Burnley have confirmed their place in the Premier League next season by grabbing the two automatic promotion spots.
Four teams will now bid to join the two sides in the English top-flight when the Championship play-offs begin.
Last year, Southampton won the play-off final to make an immediate Premier League return, beating Leeds United 1-0 after Adam Armstrong’s first-half winner.
However, a miserable 2024-25 campaign means they have come straight back down to the second-tier.
Championship play-off dates and fixtures
Bristol City will welcome Sheffield United to Ashton Gate on Thursday night for the first leg of their semi-final tie.
And 24 hours later, Coventry City will go head-to-head with Sunderland in West Midlands in the other semi-final match.
The play-off final is scheduled to take place on May 24 at the Wembley Stadium.
May 8: Bristol City vs Sheffield United (Semi-final 1, leg 1)
May 9: Coventry City vs Sunderland ( Semi-final 2, leg 1)
May 12: Sheffield United vs Bristol City (Semi-final 1, leg 2)
May 13: Sunderland vs Coventry City (Semi-final 2, leg 2)
Championship play-off teams
Sheffield United competed with Leeds and Burnley for automatic promotion for the majority of the campaign. However, a late collapse ultimately saw them finishing 10 points behind the two promoted clubs.
Even then, Chris Wilder’s team are 14 points above Sunderland, who ended with five consecutive defeats on the final day but comfortably secured a play-off spot.
Meanwhile, Coventry City booked their spot with an excellent 2-0 success over Middlesbrough last Saturday.
In the other game on the final day, Bristol City came back from two goals down to draw with Preston North End as they also earned a place in the Championship play-offs.
